SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean activists have filed a lawsuit to stop an actress selling erotic photographs of herself posed in the brothel wear of Asian sex slaves who served Japanese soldiers during World War Two.
Actress and former Miss Korea Lee Seung-yeon plans to sell nude and semi-nude photographs and a video under the theme of "comfort women" on the Internet.
"Comfort women" is the Japanese euphemism for the estimated 200,000 women who were conscripted to serve in battle zone brothels across Asia run by Japan's government during the war. Most were Korean.
In a country where resentment over Japan's 1910-45 occupation of the Korea peninsula remains strong, the 35-year-old Lee added insult to injury by planning to put out the photographs on March 1, a Korean national holiday commemorating resistance to Japanese rule.
The Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan issued a statement accusing Lee and her publisher of trying to profit on the women's painful history.
The group filed a court injunction on Friday to stop the sale of the photographs. A spokeswoman for the group said they were not sure when courts would handle the motion.
Meanwhile, Lee came in for harsh criticism on South Korea's Internet discussion boards.
"Lee is a pathetic woman who does not understand the word humiliation," wrote one participant in an online chat room, rejecting the actress's assertion that she did not pose for the money.
"What she's doing is killing the comfort women a second time," another wrote.
A dwindling group of elderly South Korean and other Asian survivors from among the comfort women have been fighting an uphill legal battle for the past decade to win an official Japanese government apology. About a dozen women protest outside Japan's Seoul embassy each week.
"What these women want is not money or sympathy," said Kang Ju-hae, a representative of the womens' support group. "They just want their dignity back."
